Since the declaration of the state of emergency in three Northern states of Nigeria namely Borno, Yobe and Adamawa, we have been spoon fed with stories about how the military is winning the war against insurgency only from the military spokeperson which to me is undemocratic and uncivilized. Is this not a violation of the ethos of civilized engagement between two parties when the stronger group censors information about a conflict? Is this censorship not a license to violate the rules of engagement which we all know emphasizes respect for sanctity of human life? Can we trust the military to be truthful about happenings when there are no umpire or independent eye witness to verify happenings? As we continue this onslaught against terrorists, it is important that the military be told that unless they stop this policy of communication censorship, their reports of battle line activities will only be taken with a pinch of salt knowing fully well the antecedents of the Nigerian military which has a penchant for human rights violations that qualifies for Guinness book of records
